2020 Broom & Button Cup Finals
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Massachusetts limited us to 25 people curling at a time. This still allowed us to have three full sheets per night, which also let us to keep extra distance with an empty sheet between active sheets. But despite the pandemic, our Covid curling guidelines, and a late-season state-mandated curfew, we miraculously were able to complete our 8-week fall season.
This past Friday night had the top 8 pointspiel finishers playing for the Broom & Button Cup: Scott Fernandes, Maureen Palermo, Chuck Palermo, Andrew Jussaume, Mike McKenzie, Steve Falconer, Jonathan Hickey, and Caitlin Carney.
On paper it looked like Scott’s team had a significant advantage with two of the club’s top skips (Scott and Andy) on the same team, while Maureen’s skip (Mike) isn’t used to arena ice and her vice (Jon) was vicing for just his second time. But the back-and-forth game was close, with the game tied at 7 after seven ends.
Scott had the hammer in the eighth end, and before his final shot it wasn’t quite clear who had shot rock (a yellow and red stone both looked about the same distance from the center). On Scott’s final shot of the night, he was able to squeeze through guards for a short double-raise right to the button for the win!
Congratulations to Scott’s team on their win! And thanks to everyone who participated in this season, with all its difficulties.
Below are some photos from the final night of our fall season from all three sheets. Good curling, South Shore!
